All airlines have a set of rules and regulations for carrying items in checked and carry-on baggage. They are classified under the category of restricted and prohibited items. You cannot carry some in your checked, and some in your carry-on, while for a few items the restriction is both for checked as well as carry-on baggage. TSA has their set of rules and regulations regarding what you can carry on board and what you cannot. Besides that Breeze also has its respective restrictions. Let’s take a look.
TSA’s Regulations – The Dos and the Don’ts
Here is a list of some of the many items which are prohibited by TSA to carry either in the carry-on or as checked baggage or in both.
- Aerosol insectisides – Not allowed in carry-on, can be carried as checked baggage under special considerations.
- Alcoholic beverages – They should have greater than 24% but less than 70% of alcohol. You can carry alcohol in checked bags but the quantity shouldn’t exceed 5 litres. If you intend to bring them in carry-ons, you must carry them in a quart-sized bag, with the quantity being not more than 3.4 oz or 100 ml. If the alcoholic content exceeds 70% then you cannot carry it at all.
- Ammunition – They aren’t permissible in carry-on but can go in as checked baggage, with specific restrictions to be followed. You must securely pack small arms and ammunition in metal, fiber or wooden boxes.
- Axes and hatchets – You can only take them in your checked bags and not as carry-on.
- Sports Equipment – There is a specific restriction for baseball bats that is allowed only in your checked baggage and not in carry-on bags.
- Battery powered wheelchairs, mobility devices – You cannot take them as carry-on and must check them.
- Blasting Caps- They aren’t allowed in checked or carry-on bags.
- Bowling Balls and Bowling Pins – Sports equipment like bowling balls and bowling pins may function as a weapon and so are not allowed as carry-ons. You can only take them in your checked luggage.
- Bows and Arrows – They are permissible in checked but not in your carry-on.
- Box Cutters – You cannot bring them in your carry-on. When taking them in your checked bag, make sure that you securely wrap or sheath these objects so that they do not cause any injury to the inspectors, and baggage handlers. The blades may or may not be included when you put them in your checked bags.
- Breast Milk – You can carry them in checked and carry-on bags. If you are carrying formula milk or breast milk or toddler drinks of a quantity exceeding 3.4 ounces/100 ml, then too you may take them in your carry-on bag and do not have to accommodate them inside a quart-sized bag. These liquids are medically necessary and so there are special exceptions in their carriage.
You can bring breast milk even if your toddler or child isn’t travelling with you. If carrying breast or formula milk, informing the TSA officer before the screening process is important. You have to remove the items so that the security personnels may separately screen them and your other baggage. Transporting formula or breast milk in translucent bottles instead of pouches or plastic bags may fasten the screening process.
- Camp stoves – You may carry them both in checked as well as carry-on bags. However, you have to empty the fuel and clean them well to ensure that no residue or fuel vapors remain within. The cord and the layer items must be wrapped in bags that will help the officers to view them clearly.
These are some of the many items on which TSA has imposed restrictions, to know in detail about the prohibited items in checked or carry-on baggage. To know at length you may visit the TSA’s official website.

- For electric powered scooters and wheelchairs the batteries have to be disconnected and kept within a leak-proof container securely fastened to their assistive device.
